Legal Aid Ontario funds 76 community legal clinics throughout the province.  If you are a low-income person, Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) may be able to provide you with legal assistance with a wide variety of issues, such as domestic violence, ODSP/OW, labour issues, bankruptcy, and where to find a lawyer.

ARCH Disability Law Centre is a specialty community legal aid clinic dedicated to defending and advancing the equality rights of people with disabilities in Ontario; focuses on law reform and policy initiatives, community development, legal advice and referrals, public legal education and litigation.

The Ministry of the Attorney General can assist the public with issues related to assigning powers of attorney for health and property should you become incapable of making decisions; and secondly, how to proceed if you think someone is incapable of taking care of themselves, including how to request an assessment of someone’s capacity, finding someone to perform an assessment and making a referral to the OPGT in cases of serious risk

If you believe you have experienced discrimination or harassment, you can file an application with the HRTO. The HRTO resolves claims of discrimination and harassment brought under the Human Rights Code in a fair, just and timely way.  The HRTO first offers parties the opportunity to settle the dispute through mediation. If the parties do not agree to mediation, or mediation does not resolve the application, the HRTO holds a hearing.

Steps to Justice is a  partnership led by CLEO.  They provide step by step information about legal problems.  They have information on numerous topics as well as a section providing Guided Pathways to various legal problems.

Promotes communication as an accessibility and human rights issue for people who have speech-language disabilities.  Communication Disabilities Access Canada (CDAC) is a national, non-profit, charitable organization.  Some of the issues they have done work on are, Access to Justice, Crimes and Abuse, Safety, Communication Rights, and Legal Rights.  They have Communication Services support and other resources available for individuals with a communication disability and the general public.

ConnectABILITY is a website and virtual community dedicated to lifelong learning and support for people who have an intellectual disability, their families and support networks.   They have videos and articles regarding financial and legal issues that are relevant to individuals with a disability.

Federal programs include disability pensions and children’s benefits, savings plans and a gasoline tax refund program.

A registered disability savings plan (RDSP) is a savings plan that is intended to help parents and others save for the long term financial security of a person who is eligible for the disability tax credit (DTC).

Tax credits and deductions are available for persons with disabilities, their supporting family members, and their caregivers.

Through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), community organizations host free tax preparation clinics and arrange for volunteers to complete income tax and benefit returns for eligible individuals who have a modest income and a simple tax situation.
