CanChild is an academic network of international scientists that conduct applied clinical and health services research concerning children and youth with a variety of developmental conditions.  As a world leader in the field they strive to generate innovative knowledge and translate their research in an accessible way that is relevant and meaningful to those who need it most: families and health care providers.  Their website has a wealth of information regarding diagnosis of CP.  They have also been instrumental in developing a number of measures and tools related to gross motor function and performance for children with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral Palsy Foundation, a non-profit entity, has the mission to transform lives for people with cerebral palsy and related disabilities through research, innovation and collaboration and has grown into the largest non-government funder of cerebral palsy research in the United States.

RCA has a new provincial website to make it easier for the public and health care professionals to find publicly funded rehabilitative services in their area.

Rehabilitative Care Ontario is a provincial portal for rehabilitative care that provides general information about rehab and connects people to LHIN-specific pages where they can search for services in their LHIN.  Providers can use it to find rehabilitative care services for their patients; the public can use it to find what services are available. 

Users can search for community-based, hospital-based or inpatient rehabilitative care.  They can also search by a specific condition or patient population (e.g. stroke, hip or knee replacement).  Listings are aligned with the RCA's definitions framework for bedded and community-based care.

Empowered Kids Ontario (EKO) represents Ontario’s publicly-funded child development and rehabilitation sector. With the united voice of their members, they promote evidence-based investments, policies and programs enabling smart, innovative approaches and service delivery so kids with special needs and their families live their best lives.  Their member organizations provide treatment and support to children, youth and families in every region of Ontario.

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), affiliated with the University of Toronto, is Canada’s most research-intensive hospital and the largest centre dedicated to improving children’s health in the country.  Some of their specialties include Communication disorders, Critical Care Medicine, Developmental Paediatrics, Neurology, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Rehabilitation.

Provides listing of all doctors in the province – includes a link so that individuals can search for a new doctor or look up whether an Out-of-Hospital clinic has passed inspection.

The Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care provides access to care through primary care providers; delivering coordinated care in the community and closer to home through long-term care homes, palliative care options, mental health and addictions services, homecare services, and by educating patients to make the right decisions about their health through www.ontario.ca/health.

The provincial government has divided the province into 14 regional health networks (LHIN’s) – each local LHIN is mandated to plan, integrate and fund local health care, and improve access and patient experience.  Your local LHIN office will coordinate services for seniors, people with disabilities and people who need health care services to help them live independently in the community, including professional services, personal support services, and homemaking services.  The LHIN’s also determine eligibility and make arrangements for admission to some day programs, supportive housing/assisted living programs, and to certain chronic care and rehabilitation beds, and to all long-term care facilities.

You may qualify for government funded physiotherapy if you have a valid OHIP card and meet a number of criteria; OHIP covers physiotherapy for seniors, youth and some other patients at government-funded (OHIP) physiotherapy clinics to help patients recover from illness, surgery or injury.

To be eligible, you must have a doctor’s referral and:

• be 19 years old or younger

• be 65 years old or older

• be receiving benefits under the Ontario Disability Support Program or Family Works

If you are not in one of these groups, but you have stayed overnight in a hospital for a problem that now requires physiotherapy treatment, you are also eligible for government-funded physiotherapy with a doctor's referral.

Smile Canada Support Services is a charity dedicated to supporting racialized children & youth with disabilities and their families.  Their focus is on Muslim communities including refugees and new immigrant families.  

Smile has a variety of programs including; Parent Coaching, Financial Assistance, Therapy programs, Parent Support Groups and Service Navigation.

Their Financial Assistance Program offers funding to children and youth up to age 21.

Examples of items covered by their financial assistance includes: therapeutic items like SLP, PT, OT as well as aquatic and music therapy; respite services; assistive technology and other devices, and sensory tools.  See website and application for more details.
